It is a bold publication, ruthless in its pursuit of the truth and daring in its presentation of it. The News strives to keep up with the ever changing times, and constantly interacts with its readers through popular platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Founded in 1919, the New York Daily News was the first successful tabloid newspaper in the United States. It attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime, scandal, and violence, lurid photographs, and cartoons. In the 1920s the paper emphasized political wrongdoing such as the Teapot Dome Scandal, and social intrigue such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to her abdication.

The Daily News also provided intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics and a sports section. In addition, it favored big-picture stories, including major disasters and the anniversaries of historic events. At its peak circulation in the mid-20th century, the Daily News had 2.4 million readers a day. In its later years, the paper suffered from competition from the rival New York Post, which was even more sensational.

In a final attempt to increase its readership, the Daily News ran a screamer headline in 1975: “Ford to City: Drop Dead.” While the screamer was unsuccessful, the Daily News continued to publish strong local and national news coverage, although its circulation had declined by the turn of the 21st century.

The Daily News was published daily from 1929 to 1995 at the landmark Art Deco Daily News Building, an official City of New York landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building straddled the railroad tracks that lead into Pennsylvania Station and featured a large globe in its lobby. The News moved to a new location, 450 West 33rd Street, now known as Manhattan West, in 1995. Its old headquarters at 220 East 42nd Street became the current home of WPIX-TV and is now known as 5 Manhattan West. Today, the newspaper is distributed in the New York metropolitan area and nationwide. Its online edition is a popular source of breaking news and commentary. The News also distributes a weekly news digest, The Week, that is the antidote to information overload. The Week contains concise, twice-daily news updates curated by editors from dozens of the world’s most trusted sources.
