The Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 and once the newspaper with the largest circulation in the United States. The paper drew readers with sensational coverage of crime, scandal and violence, lurid photographs and cartoons, and other entertainment features. It also covered city news, classified ads, and sports. It was an early adopter of the Associated Press wirephoto service and developed a staff of photographers.
The News’ first headquarters, 220 East 42nd Street, was an official New York City and national landmark designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building straddled the railroad tracks that ran into Pennsylvania Station. The Daily News was a leading source of information about the city and its politics. Its reporters frequently covered public and political affairs, including the 1932 presidential election. One reporter, William Randolph Hearst, was known for his ability to secure exclusives and to manipulate the story in order to gain advantage for his newspapers.
In recent years, newspapers have struggled with declining circulation as more people shift to digital media. The News has been no exception, as its print circulation has continued to decline. Its website traffic has remained relatively stable, though the amount of time that people spend on the site has decreased.
