This new focus has been described as “law new.” The term can be hard to define but it typically means working with underserved communities, embracing technology and offering strategies that haven’t been traditional to standard legal practice.

A growing number of firms are focusing on this area of the law as a way to boost revenue and add value for their clients. It can also be a great way to diversify a firm’s offerings and attract young talent. However, a new focus in this area of the law can be risky and requires a firm to be open to innovation.

Local Law 13 of 2022 would require the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, in consultation with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), to prepare a notice for agency employees and job applicants regarding the availability of student loan forgiveness programs. DCWP would make the notice available for City agencies to provide to their employees and job applicants, and for private employers in New York City to provide to their workers. The bill would also require the Department of Citywide Administrative Services to license third-party food delivery services and repeal a subchapter in the Administrative Code that contains existing laws regulating such services.
