The New York Daily News is a morning tabloid newspaper founded in 1919 in New York City by Joseph Medill Patterson, an American journalist. In 1990, the News faced its biggest challenge in decades when ten unions that produced and printed the newspaper went on strike. Although the newspaper continued to publish by using non-union replacement staff, this cost-cutting measure resulted in a $70 million loss in the fourth quarter alone.
Continuing with the legacy of its founders, the Daily News has become one of the most widely read newspapers in the world. It has a large readership in North America and Europe, as well as India, and is the only major U.S. newspaper to have a presence in South Africa. Its flagship building, 220 East 42nd Street near Second Avenue, is an official city and national landmark designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building was used as the model for the Daily Planet building in the Superman films.
